Portrait of a lady
I am mesmerised by this young woman. Based on her dress and the painting style, she was likely painted between. 1840 and 1860. To be painted she would have been from a wealthy family and this portrait was clearly cherished as the vintage shipping label 'Lavanchy S.A. Lausanne' attests... she was not going to be left behind!
Potentially around the 1940's the canvas was re stretched as the canvas is stapled not tacked. However the original tacks were still in the frame (which unfortunately disintegrated during travel). I have secured an orginal tack onto the canvas and the original iron fasteners so you get a sense of how far she is travelled to grace your home.
The paintings tones bring depth to a space, beautiful pared with both neutral colours or to ground a space without overwhelming other focal points, such as books or art.
